Andy Flower calls on England to Improve

Andy Flower was quick to pay tribute to his England players after they celebrated retaining The Ashes but warned the squad that they must improve if they are to do so again in the return series this winter in Australia.

Pundits on Betfair have suggested that the next Ashes series will be Flower’s last series in his current role, so the Zimbabwean will want to end his incredible tenure with another Ashes victory to his name before making the inevitable move upstairs at the ECB.

A draw in the fifth and final Test at The Oval meant England clinched a 3-0 series victory, but Director of Cricket Flower admitted there were still plenty of areas the squad need to work on before the first Test in Brisbane at the end of November.

“It takes an incredible amount of effort and skill and courage to come through a five-match Test series. But winning in Australia is a tough ask and we must play some of our best cricket. We know we are capable of it,” said Flower.

“In this series we didn’t play our best cricket. I think that is fair to say. There is room for us to improve and our guys will be working hard to ensure that happens.”

While the latest odds on betfair suggested that England were never really in danger of losing their grip on the famous Ashes urn, there were clearly times in which a pretty average Australia side dominated some spells in the series.

And while England will head to Australia has favourites with Betfair again, Alastair Cook and his men will know they will have to be at their best to make sure they don’t come unstuck in an entirely different set of conditions Down Under.
