A Star is born : David Hussey

The stage was all set for a win by the New South Wales Blues, they had set Victoria 455 runs to win on the final day. Then strode to the wicket David Hussey, with a century partnership with Jon Moss, and big partnerships with Cameron White and Peter Roach, Victoria achieved the 2nd biggest run chase in Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup history with 20 overs left to spare. In that innings David Hussey contributed 212* off 218 deliveries in what surely was the innings
of his life so far.

The Blues captain Steve Waugh went as far as saying that David Hussey was good enough to play International Cricket, and should be in the mix for the test and one dayers for Australia .The late David Hookes sang his praises’ for Hussey saying he was one of many Victorians yet to receive national recognition. The humble David Hussey on meeting a media frenzy played a straight bat to the media, and said at this stage he was more focused on a Pura and ING cup final, but would gladly play if picked.

On looking at Hussey’s season so far the younger brother of Mike Hussey, David has scored over 700 runs at an average over a hundred, and has scored 4 centuries so far including the double hundred against New South Wales. He also has scored 177 in the second eleven competition, although his form in the one day game this year so far has been moderate. Hussey made his first class debut for Victoria last season after he could not find a spot in the strong Western Australian batting line up.

With Steve Waugh recently retired Hussey’s brilliant first class season this year may see him the surprise choice in the Australian squad to tour Sri Lanka later this season. Whatever the case the future looks rosy for young Hussey, who may leapfrog Hodge, Love, Clarke and Lehman for a new baggy green this season. Hussey lines up for the Prime Ministers XI game against India next week.
