Australia’s bull dozer at the top – Matthew Hayden was awarded with the ‘ODI Player of the Year’ for his consistent performances over the year. Hayden smashed nearly 1400 runs playing 26 ODIs averaging over 60 between August 2006 and August 2007. Hayden was given the award by former Pakistan Captain Rameez Raza. Hayden was voted ahead of Ricky Ponting and fast bowler Glenn McGrath.

On receiving the award, Haydos said that it is a great honour for him to receive this award and that it’s not so long ago that his place in the side was far from certain so this is very pleasing for him. He added that batting with Adam Gilchrist is always fun. And that the style he and Gilly adopt could be regarded as risky and is definitely something they had talked about. Hayden also revealed that for him and Gilchrist, it’s not about fifties and hundreds and that the scoring-rates are more important for his team and getting them off to a good start so that the guys coming in can make the most of it.
