Ricky PontingRicky Ponting has announced that he has resigned as Australia’s Captain in both ODIs and Test Matches with immediate effect.

The Aussies who won the World Cup twice in 2003 and 2007 under him had an exit in the Quarter Finals in the ongoing World Cup 2011 against India. Ponting has led Australia in 77 Tests and 228 ODIs. It has been a difficult time for Ponting as a Captain after the retirement of great players like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Matt Hayden and Adam Gilchrist all at once.

The 36-year-old Ponting says that he is available for selection as a batsman. The next Australian Captain replacing him could most probably be Michael Clarke. Australia are to tour Bangladesh in the first week of April with the squads to be announced tomorrow.
