Vernon Philander bowls Proteas to massive win in Johannesburg Test

Australia’s nightmare series in South Africa has ended with a crushing defeat by 492 runs in the SA vs Aus 4th Test at Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Vernon Philander produced a dream spell of 13-5-21-6 as Australia collapsed to 119 all out in just 46.4 overs after being a set a target of 612.

On the final day of the fourth test at New Wanderers Stadium, Australia resumed play at 88 for 3. It needed a mere 16.4 overs for the South Africans to bowl them out to win the series 3-1.

In the very first ball on the final day, Shaun Marsh was caught bat pad in the slips off Vernon Philander. Three balls later, his younger brother Mitchell Marsh, was caught behind for a duck to gift Vernon Philander, his 200th test wicket.

There was no stopping after the exit of the Marsh brothers with overnight batsman Peter Handscomb dragged one onto the stumps after trying a late leave off Vernon Philander. Australia’s new skipper Tim Paine lasted 28 balls to score 7 before he was caught behind by Quinton de Kock off Vernon Philander.

Australia barely scraped past three digits before Vernon Philander got two more wickets while one came about through a run out.

Vernon Philander, who also took three wickets in the first innings, was given the Man of the Match of the SA vs Aus 4th Test at Johannesburg while Kagiso Rabada was the Man of the Series.
