Yuvraj
Singh, the sizzling left hander has picked up the inaugural
Twenty20 International Performance of the Year Award as
expected. The award couldn't go to anybody else particularly
after his exploits in the inaugural T20 World Championship in
South Africa and more so after taking the world by storm with
his six sixes in an over.
Yuvraj Singh played a crucial part in
India's win in that first edition of the Twenty20 World Cup.
Yuvraj's competitors for this award were MS Dhoni, Chris Gayle
and Brett Lee. Yuvraj was given the
award by Sri Lanka's world cup winning captain
Arjuna Ranatunga. On receiving the award, Yuvraj said that
“For me it was very important just to get nominated. There
were other great performances during the past year. For
example Chris Gayle’s innings in the World Twenty20 was
fantastic. I am very happy to collect this award and I would
like to congratulate the other players who were nominated
alongside me.
“It’s very important for any player to get his performance
recognised. You play hard and you like to think people see
that and get something out of it. I would like to thank the
ICC for recognising the performances of the players – it’s an
important aspect of the year for us.
Yuvraj also added that “after the fifth six
in that over I remember having butterflies in my stomach and I
knew that if I managed to hit it for six it would be very
special. It was a great feeling when I saw the ball go over
the boundary.” For the record, Yuvraj had hit Stuart Broad for
those six consecutive sixes at Kingsmead in Durban. He is the
only other player in International Cricket to have achieved
this feat after Herschelle Gibbs, who achieved it in the 2007
World Cup.
