India’s top order crumbled on the second day’s play of the 1st Test at the Eden Park in Auckland. The visitors recovered slightly though at 130 for 4 thanks to a promising 67* from Rohit Sharma. India are trailing behind by as many as 373 runs having conceded a huge first innings total to the Kiwis.

The day started with Brendon McCullum converting his 143* into a second double century. India has been at the receiving end of the two Brendon McCullum Test centuries. The 32-year-old got out on 224 (from 307 balls with 29 fours and 5 sixes) which is just the one run short of his career best. The other overnight batsman Corey J Anderson was robbed off what could have been a career second Test century with a bad Umpiring decision. Ishant Sharma had plenty of luck and with a few good balls got a fantastic return of 6 for 134.

New Zealand were bowled out for 503 in 121.4 overs with their end coming in the post lunch session. India had a shocker after that losing three wickets for just 10 runs on the board. Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara were dismissed in the very first over by Trent Boult while Virat Kohli was out fending off a nasty lifter from Tim Southee.

Murali Vijay looked good for his 26 before he was comprehensively cleaned up by a special delivery from Neil Wagner, one that angled in from round the sticks but cut away to hit top of off. Rohit Sharma saved the day for India with a gritty stand of 79 for the unbroken 5th wicket with Ajinkya Rahane (23*). Bad light brought early curtains to the day’s proceedings with more than 20 overs left.

This ANZ Test Series between New Zealand and India is shown live on Sony Six. The NZ Vs Ind, Test Match begins daily at 3:30 AM India time.
