India Need All Hands on Deck

The Indian Test team faces a grueling schedule between now and the end of 2014, including thirteen overseas matches with tours of New Zealand – as well as England and South Africa: their main rivals for the No. 1 spot in the ICC rankings.

With so much cricket to play, their former captain, Sourav Ganguly, has made his feelings clear regarding how he feels the selectors should react to this scenario, campaigning for the recall of both Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag, as well as calling for patience regarding the Test futures of under-pressure pair, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Rana.

Zaheer was dropped from the Test side at the end of 2012 following a series of disappointing performances and many Betfair punters thought that his career at the highest level had perhaps ended, but Ganguly suggests that his experience could prove decisive when the pressure is cranked up.

Regarding the available No. 6 spot in the batting line-up, as well as the hole at No. 4 that will be created following Sachin Tendulkar’s curtain call in November, Ganguly has stated that he believes Rohit Sharma and Suresh Rana offer the best hope for the future.

Rohit boasts a first-class average of 60.78 from his 58 games and has over 100 ODI caps under his belt, but has so far failed to be given the chance to prove himself in the Test arena. Following an injury back in February, he has been forced to watch the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli overtake him in the eyes of the selection committee.

But given a chance, the writers on Betfair.com believe there is no reason to believe that he would not be able to carry his excellent form through into Test cricket – and if he can, then there there’s every chance that India could end next year as the best cricketing side on the planet.
