John Emburey joins Graham Ford for the Coach Post

Former England Off Spinner John Emburey has surprisingly emerged as the second contender for the Indian Coach post. After a seven-man committee meeting in Bangalore on the 5th, it was only revealed that there was another person along with South African Graham Ford who would be called up for discussions on 9th. The BCCI has now cleared the air saying that they had contacted John Emburey for the same. Emburey is currently a Director of Coaching at Middlesex.

In his playing days, John Emburey was more of a steady off spinner who could keep an end tight rather than being a match winner. The 54-year-old Emburey had played in 64 Tests and 61 ODIs in which he had taken 147 and 76 wickets respectively. He was also a gritty customer with the bat. Emburey has a wealth of experience in county cricket taking more than 1600 wickets. What is surprising is that John Emburey’s track record as a coach hasn’t been anyway impressive or even noteworthy. It is learnt that Emburey’s name was suggested by none other than Sunil Gavaskar who is suspected to have been instrumental in removing Dav Whatmore in the contenders’ list. It looks likely that Graham Ford could get the nod instead of Emburey during the meeting on the 9th to which both these candidates are more than willing to attend.
