West Indies finished at a pat total of 240 for 9 in the Second ODI at the Queen’s Park Oval at Port of Spain. India will have to bat a lot better than what it did in the first ODI if it has to overhaul this competitive target of 241 to go 2-0 up. The pitch has shown plenty of favour for spinners and Amit Mishra used the conditions to his benefit to take four wickets.

The homeside got off to a much better start this time with the openers putting up 57 in 12.1 overs before Kirk Edwards (25 from 28 balls with 3 fours and a six) edged a turning leg break from Mishra to the keeper. The other opener Lendl Simmons added up 67 runs with Sarwan for the 2nd wicket before getting stumped to a wide delivery from Yusuf Pathan down the legside. Simmons scored 53 from 84 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes before jumping out of his crease too early to pay penalty.

There was a third good partnership in a row for West Indies, this time of 51 between Sarwan and Samuels which took West Indies to a solid 175 for 3 in 36 overs. Samuels played a breezy knock of 36 from 32 balls with 3 fours and a six and was stumped off Yusuf Pathan after failing to connect his big shot having left the crease. West Indies from a position of strength at that stage lost four key wickets all of a sudden to find themselves at 197 for 7 by the 44th over.

The downfall for Windies started when Ramnaresh Sarwan (56 from 90 balls with 3 fours) heaved a high full toss from Praveen Kumar in the 41st over which was caught at deep squareelg. The West Indian Umpire Peter Nero seemed to have erred in not giving that waist height full toss a noball. In the next over, a clueless Kieron Pollard was lbw for a 3-ball duck after failing to connect a sweep shot across the line to a Mishra delivery. The Indian leggie provided a double blow in two consecutive deliveries in the 44th over to get rid of Dwayne Bravo (lofting him straight to long off) and Carlton Baugh (attempting a cut shot and getting clean bowled by a spinnig googly).

West Indies recovered decently well from 197 for 7 to 240 for 9 thanks to Skipper Darren Sammy who scored a crucial unbeaten 22 from 19 balls which included two sixes. Munaf Patel had impressive figures of 3 for 35 with 2 maidens in his 10 overs while Amit Mishra turned his leg break regularly past the bat to get 4 for 31 with two maidens in his 10 overs.
