Rahul Dravid resigns from Captaincy!

It’s not just the Twenty20 World Championship that has been creating the sensation. Back in India, the BCCI launched a multi million dollar Professional League to bring in a new era in world cricket. The next day came the breaking news that Rahul Dravid has decided to resign as the Indian Captain! Dravid is said to have informed the BCCI President Sharad Pawar about his decision yesterday. He also informed Sharad Pawar not to consider him as the Captain for the One Day Series against Australia at home! Already desperately on the look out for a Coach, now the BCCI will have to quickly decide on whom to give the responsibility of captaincy.

The big question is who will be the next Indian Captain. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is leading the Indian team in the Twenty20 World Championship. But will he be asked to lead in Tests and ODIs after just around three years of being in the international circuit? Sourav Ganguly has been happy getting runs without the responsibility of being the Captain and Sachin Tendulkar giving hints about his retirement puts the BCCI in a huge dilemma to search for someone fresh. Yuvraj Singh is another candidate for the spot but he hasn’t been a Test Regular. Same is the case with Virender Sehwag who has been Vice-Captain for quite some time and also Captain on a few occasions, but he has been in and out of the team recently which might rule him out.

Rahul Dravid was a deputy to Sourav Ganguly for a longtime before taking the reigns in 2005. His tenure was dominated by the controversies between Sourav Ganguly and Coach Greg Chappell. Dravid, however had a successful run atleast at home along with a couple of Test wins. Under his captaincy, India went onto register historical Test Series victories in West Indies and England. But where Rahul Dravid had lost the public support was the first round loss in the 2007 World Cup and a couple of disastrous One Day Series defeat.

As of now, it is confirmed that Dravid is gone as the Captain but the reason why he has resigned all of a sudden is not known. Dravid has refused to comment on the matter so far. Sharad Pawar did reveal that Dravid wanted to concentrate on his batting and give opportunity for a new Captain. The mystery will be there for a few days until the answers to the two questions are known – Why did Dravid resign? and Who will be the new Indian Captain? The answers might be known on the 18th when the BCCI meets up to take this matter.
