Salvi turns thing around for Mumbai

Hosts Karnataka have totally squandered away the advantage of bowling out Mumbai for 233 in the first day’s play. They got bundled out in reply for a paltry 130 inside 50 overs with Glenn McGrath wannabe Aasvishkar Salvi capturing a mean 5 for 31!

Tall fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun brought Karnataka into the game when Mumbai began its second innings by reducing them to 51 for 5. But an unbroken partnership of 57 between Abhishek Nayar (32 not out from 103 balls with 3 fours) along with Dhawal Kulkarni (35 not out from 60 balls with 8 fours) seems to be taking the Trophy away from Karnataka! Mumbai now looks pretty with a second innings lead of 211.

None of the Karnataka batsman had got to a fifty early on. Opener KB Pawan top scored with 33 on what looks like a spicy pitch. Salvi could take his five wickets in just 13.3 overs. The second day’s play saw as many as 14 wickets fall down!

There is no tearaway quick amongst both the sides, the fastest bowler is perhaps Ajit Agarkar. However, there is a new find in Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun who has taken 7 wickets so far and bowling with a lot of fire. Batsmen with good technique should be able to battle it out on this pitch and score runs.

Karnataka’s trump cards in the rest of the match are going to be Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey, the motivation for them is the relatively good crowd turnout for the match. If Mumbai can get them out cheaply then defending the Trophy will not be that difficult given the fact the hosts are not having Rahul Dravid in their line up.
