Virender Sehwag GalleIndia are fighting for survival in the Galle Test after finishing the third day’s play on 140 for 3 in 29.4 overs. This was after Sri Lanka’s declaration of their first innings at 520 for 8 by Tea time.

There was a full day’s play at Galle with the rain staying away. Surprisingly, the Sri Lankan batting heroes for today were tail-enders Rangana Herath (80* from 93 balls with 10 fours and a six) and Lasith Malinga (64 from 75 balls).  The duo lifted Sri Lanka from 393 for 7 to a total of 500 plus. India had a good morning session with both Ishant Sharma and debutant Abhimanyu Mithun who got the ball to dart off the seam in both the directions. Mithun finished with an impressive 4 for 105 in 28 overs while Ishant was expensive taking 3 for 145 in 28 overs.

The visitors started poorly with the bat when Gautam Gambhir fell across in a flick shot against Lasith Malinga in what was only the second ball of the innings.  Rahul Dravid came in and steadied things with Sehwag but was run out by the latter’s wrong call for a non-existent second run. The biggest wicket of the day was that of Sachin Tendulkar’s with the master misreading the length in a full delivery from Muttiah Muralitharan to be out lbw. Muralitharan with this scalp has moved onto 793 test wickets.

By the close of play, Virender Sehwag has moved onto 85* from 98 balls with 14 fours and a six. Giving him company is the experienced VVS Laxman who is batting on 18.
