Skipper Michael Clarke who had retired hurt on 60 due to a back spasm on Day 1 surprised everyone by turning out to bat with Australia in a shaky position at 354 for 6. Joining Steven Smith, a half-fit Michael Clarke took the Indian bowling to the cleaners. The hosts smashed 51 runs in 12.2 overs before rain hit the ground for the second time leading to an early lunch. After a brief restart, play was stopped again by rain which disrupted the afternoon session as well. By then the 25-year-old Steven Smith had reached his 5th Test century.
