Wasim Jaffer to lead defending Ranji Trophy Champions Mumbai

Wasim Jaffer has been retained as the Skipper of the Mumbai Ranji Team for this season. Mumbai are the defending Champions after beating Uttar Pradesh in the final last year. Pace spearhead Ajit Agarkar has been named as Jaffer’s Deputy while former India player Pravin Amre will be the Coach.

The 15-man squad announced by the Mumbai Selectors has the big name that of Zaheer Khan, who will be working his way back into the Indian Test team after a long lay off from a shoulder injury. The left arm fast bowler has already appeared for Mumbai in the recently held Mushtaq Ali T20 Tournament. Zaheer has a couple of Ranji games to prove his match fitness ahead of the 1st India-Sri Lanka Test Match which starts on the 16th at Ahmedabad.

The 15-man squad announced is only for the opening match against Punjab at Mohali which is from November 3-6. Mumbai will have to make a few changes for their second match as players like Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Dhawal Kulkarni and Abhishek Nayar have been picked in the Board President’s XI team to face the touring Sri Lankans.

There is a new face in this Mumbai Squad in the form of left arm spinner Harmeet Singh. This new left arm spinner is just 16 years of age and has the distinction of receiving the first Ramakant Achrekar scholarship. The 16-year-old is expected to be a part of the Indian team for the upcoming U-19 World Cup.
