India needed just over 30 minutes to clean up Sri Lanka on the final day to clinch an innings and 24 runs. The hosts led by MS Dhoni won the 3-Test Series 2-0 and by doing that emerged as the No.1 ranked team in the ICC Test Rankings ahead of South Africa.

Zaheer Khan provided the opening for India by getting rid of Kumar Sangakkara with just the third ball of the morning. The left armer angled a short ball into the left hander to force him into a defensive shot. The early morning moisture in the wicket helped the ball to seam away and take the nick of the centurion. Sangakkara had added a boundary to his overnight score of 133 before losing his wicket.

Rangana Herath was the next to depart caught at mid wicket by a diving Pragyan Ojha. The left handed tail ender miscued a pull shot off a Zaheer Khan short pitch delivery. Zaheer completed an 8th five-wicket haul with a rising delivery that had Nuwan Kulasekara fending to Laxman at second slip. Kulasekara had batted out 68 deliveries before having a similar dismissal like Thilan Samaraweera.

Harbhajan Singh finished the match in the 101st over when Muttiah Muralidaran edged a big heave to MS Dhoni. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 309. Zaheer Khan had figures of 21-5-72-5 while the other three bowlers did their part in taking crucial wickets. Virender Sehwag got both the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series awards.
