Ross Taylor smashed a breathtaking 138 in 104 balls but his side squandered the advantage of bowling out Australia cheaply on Day 1. The Kiwis were bowled out for just 264 on the second day to acquire only a slender lead of 33. Australia are 35 for no loss in their second innings.

Apart from Taylor, opener BJ Watling was the only one to contribute anything significant with his 46. The wickets were shared by the three main fast bowlers – Doug Bollinger and Ryan Harris taking three each and Mitchell Johnson picking up four.
