The first Test at Dunedin saw an exciting finish on the final day with both sides having equal chances to win the match. Pakistan were chasing a target of 251 on a track that was getting a bit unprecitable in pace and bounce. It was eventually the hosts holding their nerve to register a narrow 32-run win with Pakistan collapsing to lose their last four wickets for just 21 runs. They were bowled out for 218 in 76 overs in their second innings.

Shane Bond took three wickets again for the Kiwis to get the Man of the Match award. Iain O’Brien also took three wickets. Umar Akmal was outstanding for Pakistan scoring 75 following up his century on Test debut in the first innings. Earlier in the morning, New Zealand were bowled out for 153 in their second innings.
