India beat Syria 2-1 in Nehru Cup opener

New Delhi, Aug 23 (ANI): Defending champions India weathered rainy and damp conditions to score a 2-1 win over Syria in the opening match of the 2012 Nehru Cup soccer tournament in New Delhi. Speaking to media persons, coach of Indian team Wim Koevermans said that the home side adapted well to rainy conditions to prevent Syria from capitalising on a strong show in the first half of the match. Meanwhile, Syrian coach Marwan Khouri, said that his team failed to capitalise on scoring opportunities. Man of the Match Sunil Chhetri opened the scoring for India with a strike in the 45th minute, while the second goal came from Anthony Pereira in the 82nd minute. The lone Syrian goal was struck by Alaa al-Shibli in the 89th minute of the game.
