England defeated Pakistan by 24 runs in the first ODI at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. In a curtailed contest of 41 overs, England asked to bat first put up a solid show of 274 for 6. Newcomer Steve Davis was the star with a cracking 87 from just 67 balls. One drop batsman Jonathan Trott (69 from 78 balls) also struck a half century. For Pakistan, off spinner Saeed Ajmal took 4 wickets but went for 58 runs in his 9 overs.

Pakistan in their run chase were restricted to 250 for 9 in 41 overs with all the bowlers getting amongst the wickets. Opener Kamran Akmal top scored for the visitors with a 61-ball 53. Steve Davis was the Man of the Match.
