Australia crushed Pakistan by a comprehensive margin of 34 runs in the Group A Match at Gros Islet. Batting first after winning the toss, Australia batted Pakistan out of the match with a total of 191. There was no chance for Pakistan to get the runs against a high quality pace attack backed up by professional fielding.
Opener Shane Watson (81 from 49 balls with 7 fours and 4 sixes) with David Hussey (53 from 29 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes) ripped apart the wafer thin Pakistani bowling attack in a match-winning partnership of 98 for the third wicket.
Despite all the punishment to the bowlers, there was high drama in the last over of the innings bowled by Mohammad Aamer. The final over saw the Aussies lose five wickets in five consecutive deliveries to slip from 191 for 5 to 191 all out! It was a bizzare five-wicket maiden which included three wickets for Mohammad Aamer and two direct hit run outs from wicket keeper Kamran Akmal. Aamer was unlucky to miss out on a hat-trick though, he finished with figures of 4-1-23-3. Off spinner Saeed Ajmal bowling mostly in the death, picked up 3 for 34.
The Aussie bowlers softened up the Pakistani top order to reduce them to 70 for 4 in the 9th over. There was hardly any fight except for a 47-run partnership between Misbah-ul Haq (41 from 31 balls with a four and 2 sixes) and Shahid Afridi (33 from 24 balls). The Pakistani innings folded too like Australia. They got bowled out for 157 with Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait picking up three wickets each while Mitchell Johnson coming up with two wickets. Watson was given the Man of the Match award.
