Skipper Graeme Smith’s power packed innings of 91 from 65 enabled the Proteas to make short work of whatever challenge the Scots had put up at the Warner Park. In the Group A fixture, South Africa bashed the minnows with a 7 wicket win with as many as 26.4 overs to spare.

South Africa won the toss and put their opponents in. Although there was a stubborn opening partnership, the Scotland team failed to build on that. But the South Africans struggled to get them all out with Scotland posting a moderate 186 for 8. Former England player, Dougie Brown was the top scorer with an unbeaten 45 from 64 balls. Skipper Ryan Watson was the next highest scorer with 31. Watson was made the captain following the departure of Scotland’s original skipper Craig Wright from the Caribbean. Hall picked up three wickets to be the most successful bowler for SA while Langeveldt chipped in with a couple. South Africa brought back Makhaya Ntini in place of Andre Nel.

The opening stand for the Proteas was a rapid fire 134 put on by Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers, who was dismissed for a duck against Netherlands. AB de Villiers was the first to go down but only after he had smashed 62 from 45 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes. After a brief rain interruption, the South Africans got back to the chase only to lose the wickets of Prince (21) and Smith whose 91 had come with 13 fours and a six. Justin Kemp on 12 from 7 balls with a boundary and a six finished off the match along with Pollock. Graeme Smith took the Man of the Match award for making the chase so simple.
