Sri Lanka in a bid to defeat New Zealand with a bonus point made absolute heavy weather at Dambulla in a chase of 193. The hosts failed to achieve the bonus point eventually by five balls and just managed to win the contest by 3 wickets in the Second Match of the Tri-Series.

Batting first after winning the toss, New Zealand got into a sorry state of 123 for 7. Surprisingly through some nagging batting by the tail, the score stretched to 192. Nathan McCullum gave the respectability to the scoreboard with his 36 in the end while debutant opener BJ Watling was the top scorer with 55 (from 68 balls with 8 fours). The Kiwi innings was shaken up atleast twice because of Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga. Both the bowlers took three wickets with the coincidence that two of them came in a single over of their respective spells.

The Sri Lankan chase was eased through an 85-run stand between Man of the Match – Upul Tharanga (70 from 109 balls with 9 fours) and Kumar Sangakkara (48 from 62 balls with 5 fours) for the second wicket. Thilan Samaraweera with an unbeaten 36 from 38 balls saw the Lankans home at a time when wickets were falling in a heap during the batting powerplay. Kyle Mills was the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis with his 4 for 41.
