Sri Lankans did not have an auspicious start to their England tour as their batting crumbled to pieces during the first day’s play of their opening tour game against British Universities at Cambridge. The Sri Lankan innings lasted just over 74 overs after the homeside had put them in and the only high point of the day for the tourists was the attractive century scored by its opener Upul Tharanga. The left hander made exactly 100 with the help of 17 boundaries and couldn’t stay the distance as his was the 3rd wicket to go down at 154. Sri Lankans collapsed to 289 all out with only Thilan Samaraweera and Nuwan Zoysa getting into the thirties. For the homeside, medium pacers Ruel Brathwaite and son of Sir Vivian Richards, Mali Richards took three wickets each. In reply to Sri Lankans’ 289, British Universities were off to a poor start losing 2 wickets in the 6 overs of play in their innings. Zoysa and Vaas picked up a wicket each and Mali Richards was one of the two batsmen out.
