Pak win it for Woolmer and Inzy

March 21, 2007 (Link to Scorecard)

Inzy has led his side to victory in his last ODI appearancePakistan have succeeded in winning their tribute match for the Late Bob Woolmer and for the departing Skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq. Imran Nazir scored a sensational century to help his side bat Zimbabwe out of the contest at the Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. Zimbabwe went down by 93 runs according to the Duckworth Lewis Method in a rain interrupted match. This Zimbabwean defeat has let Ireland to advance to the next round!

Prosper Utseya won the toss today and he put Pak to bat first. A couple of changes were made in the shattered Pakistani team with Shahid Afridi and Danish Kaneria coming in for Mohammad Hafeez and Azhar Mahmood. Led by a magnificent 160 from 121 balls from Imran Nazir, Pakistan piled up 349 and were ironically bowled out with one ball remaining. Imran Nazir, the opener got his runs with 14 fours and an incredible 8 sixes and was the 7th wicket to go down in the 45th over. He was also the Man of the Match. Captain Inzamam playing his last ODI of his career scored a rapid 37 from 35 balls with two fours and three sixes. It looked as if the Pakistanis were taking all their World Cup exit frustrations on the hapless Zims.

The Zimbabweans gave the match away with a dreadful start and during the 11th over with Zimbabwe at 30 for 3, rain ensured that the play was suspended for a long period of time. Fortunately the match got resumed and the target of 350 from 50 overs was revised to 193 from 20 overs. The Zimbabweans lost their remaining 7 wickets in the 53 deliveries that were bowled after play got underway! Shahid Afridi was the most successful as he picked up three wickets. Danish Kaneria, the more conventional leg spinner took two wickets but was smacked for 48 runs in 4 overs. There was also a maiden ODI wicket for Mohammad Yousuf who bowled just the one ball to take the final wicket! For the record, Zimbabwe fell one run short of reaching three figures. Elton Chigumbura provided some entertainment with 4 sixes in his short innings of 11 balls. This is the only victory that the Pakistan team has achieved in this tournament and will be heading back home. Zimbabwe couldn't even have a win under their belt with their match against Ireland ending in a dramatic tie.
