Rohit Sharma became the 14th Indian player to score a Century on Test Debut to rescue India big time on Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. R Ashwin provided Rohit terrific support at the other end to help India get into a sizable first innings lead of 120 runs with four wickets intact. Ashwin himself is closing onto a 2nd Test century with just another 8 runs to get there. Both Rohit and Ashwin are still batting with their 7th wicket stand unbroken having already added 198 runs!

India was in a huge spot of bother at 83 for 5 in reply to West Indies’ first innings total of 234. Shane Shillingford with his mixture of off breaks and doosras tantalized the Indian batsmen taking four wickets in the morning session. Shikhar Dhawan was first to be dismissed, bowled off an inside edge in a forcing shot on the backfoot to the off-spinner. His fellow opener Murali Vijay was stumped off Shillingford having left the crease and getting foxed by a doosra.

Cheteshwara Pujara was caught behind off debutant left-arm quick Sheldon Cottrell in an attempted upper cut to one that followed him with bounce. Sachin Tendulkar was next to be dismissed, failing to read a doosra from Shillingford which squared him to have him lbw. Tendulkar was unlucky to be given out because of the height of the ball but then in realtime it did look out. The veteran batsman scored 10 runs in his 24-ball stay with a couple of superbly struck boundaries. Virat Kohli was the last man out before lunch, caught bat pad to a jumping off break from Shillingford.

India were steadied after all the destruction by Skipper MS Dhoni and debutant Rohit Sharma. Dhoni got out just before drinks in the afternoon session with his feet not moving forward in a drive off a full length outswinger from Tino Best. The Indian Captain scored 42 in a crucial 6th wicket stand of 73 runs. Rohit Sharma with 127* (from 228 balls with 16 fours and a six) alongside R Ashwin (92* from 148 balls with 10 fours) got together after Dhoni’s exit to frustrate the West Indians for the rest of the day! India ended the second day’s play at 354 for 6 in 102 overs. The West Indian attack is already too tired with Shane Shillingford bowling as many as 41 overs!
