Sammy, Rampaul bowl hosts to thriling win in First Test

West Indies defeated Pakistan in the 1st Test at the Providence Stadium in Guyana by 40 runs in what was a match dominated completely by the bowlers. The match was wrapped up in 3 and a half days with Pakistan needing 219 for a win got bowled out for 178 in 73 overs. Pakistan who got reduced to 2 for 3 recovered slightly through solid knocks from Asad Shafiq (42) and Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (52). But once again slipped into trouble at 135 for 6. Dangerman Umar Akmal played a fighting knock of 47 before he fell in the 71st over with still plenty of runs to get. West Indies Skipper Darren Sammy was the star with the ball capturing 5 for 29 in 17 overs while Ravi Rampaul played his part too taking 4 for 48.

It was the hosts who had won the toss and elected to bat first but only to get bowled out for a low total of 226 in 98 overs. Off Spinner Saeed Ajmal claimed 5 for 69 for the visitors. Pakistan in their first innings got bundled out for a paltry 160 in 64.4 overs with leggie Devendra Bishoo taking four wickets and Rampaul getting three wickets. West Indies did not do well in the 2nd innings either as they got bowled out for just 152 in 61.5 overs with Saeed Ajmal taking 6 for 42 to get a total of 11 wickets in the match. The hosts were still having the advantage as they had picked up a handy first innings lead of 66 runs to leave Pakistan with a challenging target of 219 on a deteriorating pitch. Darren Sammy got the Man of the Match for taking a match haul of 7 for 45.
