Australia bounced back from their T20I defeat to crush India by a big margin of 72 runs in the opening ODI at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Sunday.

Batting first after winning the toss, Australia posted a par total of 304/8 in 50 overs. Openers Phil Hughes (47 from 53 balls) and Aaron Finch (72 from 79 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes) put up a beautiful opening stand of 110 in 18.2 overs. Skipper George Bailey consolidated things for the visitors with a well paced knock of 85 from 82 balls with 10 fours for which he got the Man of the Match award. Glenn Maxwell once again came out with a cameo for the Aussies, scoring 31 from 23 balls with three sixes. Ravindra Jadeja bowled well for India, taking 1 for 35 in 10 overs. R Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh collected two wickets each.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli did their bit in setting up India’s run chase but the duo couldn’t last the distance. Rohit scored 42 from 47 balls before getting caught behind off Watson in the 14th over. Kohli was looking good on 61 (from 85 balls with 6 fours) before he fell to the demands of the growing required run rate. Suresh Raina provided him with some support scoring 39 from 45 balls while Yuvraj Singh flopped despite showing some promises with a sixer.

Skipper MS Dhoni disappointingly got bowled by Clint McKay for 19 and with his wicket, India slipped to a losing position at 196 for 7 in the 41st over. The hosts were ultimately bowled out for 232 in 49.4 overs. For the Aussies, James Faulkner took 3 for 47 while Clint McKay and Shane Watson took two wickets each besides bowling economically well. Mitchell Johnson was red hot giving away only 38 from his 10 overs besides removing danger man Yuvraj Singh.
