Kolkata Knight Riders caused an upset to defending champions Deccan Chargers in the inaugural match of the IPL – 3 at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. The Knight Riders won the match by 11 runs after Deccan Chargers made heavy weather of a moderate target of 162 despite getting a sound start from Skipper Adam Gilchrist, who made 54 from 35 balls.
Chargers who won the toss and elected to field first had the Knight Riders in all sorts of trouble at 31 for 4 in the 6th over. However, a responsible unbroken partnership of 130 between Owais Shah (58* from 46 balls) and Man of the Match Angelo Mathews (65* from 46 balls) provided a competitive total of 161 for 4 to the bowlers.
Deccan Chargers were coasting along towards the target at 102 for 2 in the 13th over but the star batsmen threw away their wickets in some unbelievable fashion. Towards the end, the Chargers lacked the quality to finish the match in their favour.
