Australia smashed Sri Lanka out of the game by piling up a huge first innings score of 542 for 5 despite rain and bad light interruptions during the second day’s play at Hobart. Sri Lanka however could survive a testing period of 12 overs without losing a wicket. Sri Lanka have opted for a new combination of Marvan Atappatu and Michael Vandort with Sanath Jayasuriya kept in the middle order.

At the start of the second day’s play, Australia were already at the top at 329 for 3. Michael Hussey’s knock came to an end finally after he was beaten by a big inswinging yorker from Dilhara. Hussey made 132 facing 220 balls with the help of 18 fours and a six. The other overnight batsman Michael Clarke helped himself to 71 (from 123 balls with 8 fours) before he became Lasith Malinga’s first wicket of the match. The Sri Lankans still had to face the music with the dangerous Andrew Symonds (50 from 71 with 4 fours and a six) and Adam Gilchrist (67 from 7 fours and 3 sixes) striking powerful unbeaten half centuries before the inevitable declaration.
